We had a short ride out this morning to see the maelstrom at saltstraumen. Incredible power of opposing waters, through a narrow gap. In coming tide, and outflowing river, creating whirlpools and boiling water. Looked like some monster from the deep was rousing and about to surface. High tide brought the biggest effect, and a high tide of tourists, but it was just as impressive an hour before that when we had the place virtually to ourselves. It was absolutely freezing though, biting Arctic wind. I think it was the coldest we've been on the trip.
This evening the others went for the promised curry in the most northerly Indian any of them are likely to visit. As the idea for the trip was conceived in an Indian it seemed appropriate. Food was very good, but service was of the same standard as 'balti towers' in Andover.
The sun came out for the evening and Bodo looked a lot better than it has done. Sitting in the harbour was a small yacht recently arrived from Southampton.
As things looked promising we drove a bit further north to a point where we had a view of the northern horizon in the hope of the sky staying clear enough for us to see the midnight sun. Although the sun dipped in to low cloud near the horizon, it very clearly never set and started rising up again. Not a perfect view but, given the last few days, during which we hadn't even seen the sun, far, far better than we were expecting and a real bonus.
